About the Farm
A Shared Space for Growing Good Things
Common Acre is a ½-acre market garden based in the Aldinga Arts Eco Village, on shared land that’s been tended by many hands before ours. As a not-for-profit, community-focused farm, we grow seasonal vegetables using organic principles—for the soil, for our neighbours, and for the generations to come.
Why “Common Acre”?
The name Common Acre draws inspiration from the idea of common field farms, traditional shared agricultural systems where people worked the land collectively for the benefit of all. Our farm is located on community owned land within the Aldinga Arts Eco Village, a place with strong permaculture roots and principles of cooperation, sustainability, and creative community living.
By naming our farm Common Acre, we honour this legacy of shared stewardship and reflect our vision: a local food system grounded in reciprocity, care, and access for all.
How we farm
We use regenerative farming techniques that build soil health and protect the land.
Our approach includes:
Minimal tillage – gently preparing the soil without disturbing its natural structure
Tilthing and aeration – improving airflow and water retention with shallow cultivation
Compost and organic fertiliser – feeding the soil to feed the plants
No synthetic chemicals – we follow organic principles and grow with care
Closed-loop systems – returning organic matter to the soil, always giving back what we take
History of the land
Common Acre grows from the strong foundations left by Village Greens of Willunga Creek which operated for 10 years on the very same land. When Village Greens unfortunately closed in January 2025, they left a huge gap, not just in our local food system but in the fabric of our community.
In an effort to save the land from becoming weeds and to honour the years of hard work and dedication by the team at Village Greens, we approached our local community for support to save the farm.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors, the support of the Aldinga Arts Eco Village, and the efforts of many individuals, we were able to purchase the farm assets from Village Greens and take on the lease for the land.
We hope to continue the good work of those that came before us by growing food for locals, keeping the land productive, and creating a space for connection, learning, and community resilience.
We’re proud to be a part of the next chapter for this land, and grateful to everyone who has helped make it possible.
